The "Impossible" Map
The "Impossible" Map
This is a world map unlike any you've ever seen. For starters it is displayed using only hexagons (and hexagonal-like fractals) which was considered impossible for many. It's constant area, so that the countries are accurately represented in their size – in fact you can estimate the sizes of countries or continents by simply counting the tiles. But because of the hexagonal tiles, you can easily see how pieces connect to each other. If you cut the map up, you can even rearrange the world map into new formats.
This completely novel map projection is an interesting conversation starter for map and geography geeks.
Read more about the creation of the map on my blog. This paper was published in the Bridges Conference for Art and Mathematics.
